The Mother Church of Saints Martin and Lucia in Apricena was rebuilt in 1628 on the ruins of the medieval parishes destroyed by the 1627 earthquake. The bell tower survived intact, and the new church—uniting both dedications—was consecrated in 1629. Its façade preserves a historic inscription from that era. Over the centuries, the church underwent major restorations: an organ was added in 1819, a chapel dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament was built in 1903, and in 1940 it was richly decorated for the coronation of the Virgin, patroness of Apricena. In 1972, the presbytery was updated according to Vatican II, and in 1999 the side nave was reinforced and artworks restored, including a Florentine mosaic and Marian paintings. From 2003 to 2005, the façade, bell tower, and annexes were structurally restored. Today, this church remains Apricena’s spiritual core, preserving centuries of faith and local heritage.
