Living Passion Interpretation Centre of Balmaseda

Housed in the former Convent of Santa Clara, founded in 1666 through the legacy of merchant Juan de la Piedra Verástegui, the Living Passion Interpretation Centre offers visitors a year-round introduction to one of Spain’s most remarkable Holy Week traditions. The Baroque church preserves important 17th- and 18th-century altarpieces and a historic organ dating from 1777, among the oldest in Biscay.

The museum is dedicated to the renowned Living Passion of Balmaseda, a dramatic re-enactment of Christ’s Passion involving more than 650 local participants. Through costumes, props, images and audiovisual displays, visitors can trace the evolution of the tradition from early penitential processions to the elaborate performances staged today, including the Last Supper, Pilate’s Judgment, the Crucifixion and other key scenes that have made Balmaseda’s Holy Week internationally recognized.
