Las Lajas Sanctuary

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Las Lajas, located in the dramatic canyon of the Guáitara River near Ipiales in southern Colombia, is one of the most striking Marian pilgrimage sites in Latin America. Built directly on a stone bridge spanning the canyon, the church appears suspended between heaven and earth, perfectly integrated into its natural surroundings. Since the 18th century, pilgrims from Colombia, Ecuador and beyond have travelled here, drawn by devotion, gratitude and the search for spiritual comfort.

The sanctuary’s origin is linked to a miraculous tradition. Around 1754, an indigenous woman, María Mueses, and her young daughter Rosa reportedly discovered the image of the Virgin of the Rosary painted directly onto a stone slab. At that moment, the child—previously believed to be deaf and mute—spoke for the first time. The image, inseparable from the natural rock, became the spiritual heart of the site. Over time, several chapels were built, culminating in the current neogothic basilica, constructed between 1916 and 1949 through popular devotion.

Today, Las Lajas remains a living place of pilgrimage, its access walls covered with ex-votos, plaques and objects left in thanksgiving for favours received. Major pilgrimages take place in September during the feast of Our Lady, during Holy Week, and at the end of the year. Declared a minor basilica and a National Cultural Heritage site, Las Lajas offers a powerful spiritual experience where faith, landscape and architecture converge in an unforgettable way.
