Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad José Luis Díaz Segovia

Hermitage of La Piedad

The Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad, located in the village of El Barraco, in the province of Ávila, is a temple with strong popular roots that unites devotion and tradition among the local inhabitants. Built in carved ashlar masonry in the 15th century, the hermitage has a single rectangular nave, which is accessed through a small garden. Inside, there is an altar dedicated to the Virgen de la Piedad, protector of the town, along with a modern carving dating from 1953, representing the Virgin offering the Child Jesus.

The ceiling of the nave is topped with a coffered ceiling of clear Moorish influence, as is its brick bell tower, which crowns the structure. The bell of the hermitage has a special meaning for the town, since it used to ring twice a day, marking the beginning and the end of the working day. This small sanctuary represents a mixture of spirituality and tradition, which is still alive in the daily life of the people of Barraco.
