Deir Anba Bishoy

The Monastery of Anba Bishoy, the largest active Coptic Orthodox monastery in Wadi El Natrun, was founded in the late 4th century by Saint Bishoy, known in the Coptic tradition as “the Beloved of Christ.” A disciple of Saint Macarius, Bishoy became renowned for his humility, intense asceticism, and his ability to perceive the divine in the vulnerable. Tradition recounts that Christ appeared as a weary traveler, and Bishoy alone stopped to carry Him—an episode that defines his spiritual legacy of compassion and interior clarity.

Through the centuries, the monastery endured repeated Berber raids, destruction and rebuilding, shaping a rich architectural and monastic landscape that includes five churches, an 11th-century fortress, ancient and modern monk cells, a historic refectory, gardens, a library, the monks’ cemetery, and guesthouses. It preserves the relics of Anba Bishoy and Abba Paula. Major expansions and restorations were carried out under Pope Shenouda III, who frequently retreated here. Today the monastery remains a vibrant spiritual center, uniting living monastic tradition with deep archaeological heritage.
