The church of Santa María la Mayor de Herradón, built in the 15th century in the Elizabethan Gothic style, is an architectural jewel that stands out for its southern portal and its imposing interior. The doorway has a semi-circular arch with smooth archivolts decorated with balls resting on columns. Above this doorway there are three niches that originally housed sculptures of St. Peter, St. Paul and a representation of the Virgin with Child and St. John. One of its main attractions is the altarpiece of the high altar, from the 16th century, attributed to Pedro de Salamanca, from the school of Berruguete. This altarpiece depicts scenes from the life of the Virgin and is crowned by a carving of the “Annunciation and Coronation of the Virgin”. The church also stands out for its Mudejar armor and its tribune, attributed to Lucas Giraldo.
