The church of Santo Domingo de Silos, located in Arévalo’s Plaza del Arrabal, is an excellent example of Mudejar architecture transformed into Renaissance and Baroque styles. Originally built in the 13th century, it preserves a slender Mudejar apse with double arches on a masonry base, following the Toresano model. The main façade, which dates from 1572, has an entrance with a triple arch and decorative elements in the Escorial style, as well as the coat of arms of Santo Domingo. In the interior, with three naves, the Baroque main altarpiece and the Plateresque grille by the master Bartolomé Ordoñez in the presbytery stand out, behind which are the relics of San Victorino Mártir, patron saint of Arévalo.
The temple also houses valuable works of art, among them an image of San Francisco de Asís, attributed to the workshop of Gregorio Fernández, an impressive Christ without polychrome from the 16th century, and the Virgen de las Angustias, patron saint of Arévalo, whose feast day is celebrated on February 9th. At the foot of the Baroque tower, on the Epistle side, you can admire a series of 16th-century mural paintings attributed to a pupil of Juan de Borgoña. Currently, the church of Santo Domingo is the main parish church of Arévalo and one of the most important places of worship in the city.
