The Church of Saint Cecilia is one of the most important historic landmarks in Espinosa de los Monteros. Built from 1527 onward on the site of an earlier Romanesque church—of which a column still survives on the southern wall—the building combines Late Gothic traditions with Renaissance architectural forms. Its spacious hall-church layout, featuring three naves of equal height and intricate star-vaulted ceilings, reflects the artistic transition taking place in Castile during the 16th century.
The church’s most distinctive feature is its Renaissance apse, which evolves from a square base into a five-sided polygon crowned by an elegant shell-shaped vault. Several Baroque altarpieces enrich the interior. The church also witnessed a dramatic chapter of Spanish history, having been looted by French troops during the Battle of Espinosa de los Monteros in 1808.
