Located in San Paolo di Civitate’s historic center, the Church of San Nicola was the town’s first church within the walls, founded in the early 1600s. Nearly destroyed by the 1627 earthquake, it was rebuilt between 1704 and 1709 through a vow by Michele Magnati. From 1801 to 1804 it was expanded in late Baroque style, featuring an elliptical nave, dome ceiling, ornamental stuccoes, and a two-tiered façade. Paintings by Vittorio Rotelli were added in 1935. Severely damaged by the 2002 earthquake, it was restored thanks to over 53,000 public votes in the 2012 FAI “Places of the Heart” campaign, enabling the recovery of its structure, roofs, and exterior beauty.
