The Church of San Francesco a Ripa, in the Trastevere district of Rome, is an important Franciscan site built on the site of a 10th century hospital and hospice. This complex, promoted by Giacoma de Settesoli and Pandolfo II degli Anguillara, was ceded to the Order of Friars Minor in 1229 and became a center of Franciscan devotion, especially because it received St. Francis of Assisi during his papal visits between 1209 and 1223.
In the 17th century, Mattia de Rossi designed the current façade and a remarkable dome without a barrel vault. The interior, with a Latin cross and divided into three naves with ribbed vaults, houses valuable works of art. Among them are the “Beata Ludovica Albertoni” by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, famous for its mystical Baroque representation, and the altarpiece of the “Annunciation” by Francesco Salviati. The church also preserves an altarpiece of St. Francis, attributed to Margaritone d’Arezzo, and the remains of St. Charles of Sezze in the chapel dedicated to his name.
