Church of Saint Peter in Chains

The Parish Church of St Peter in Chains (Knisja Parrokkjali San Pietru fil-Ktajjen) in Birżebbuġa was established when the town became a parish on 9 September 1913, replacing the smaller Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. With a growing population, the foundation stone for a new church was laid in 1926, and although work continued until 1951, it opened for worship in 1938. Built in Sicolo-Norman style with three altars, it is the only parish church in Malta dedicated to St Peter in Chains. The annual feast on the first Sunday of August includes a remarkable sea procession where the statue of St Peter is carried by boat from St George’s Bay to Pretty Bay, accompanied by dozens of vessels and music bands. This tradition, started in 1974, reflects the town’s fishing heritage and makes this festa one of Malta’s most distinctive cultural celebrations.
