Chapel of the Annunciation

The Chapel of the Annunciation in Salini, locally known as tal-Lunzjata, is a charming 16th-century chapel once part of the Naxxar parish and now belonging to Burmarrad. It was already documented in 1618, and in 1776 two side buttresses were added to reinforce the structure. Mass is still celebrated here every Saturday. The chapel is surrounded by peaceful countryside and sits next to a cluster of early Christian catacombs.

The Paleo-Christian catacombs, likely dating to the 2nd or 3rd century AD, are carved into hard limestone and provide vital insight into a once significant Christian community. Visitors will find agape tables carved from rock, baldaquino tombs, and a variety of grave types. These features make the site one of the most unique early Christian burial places in Malta, reflecting a blend of religious practices that is rarely matched elsewhere in the Mediterranean.
