Aberdour Castle

Aberdour castle is located in the village of Easter Aberdour, Fife, Scotland. Aberdour castle was built around the 1100’s, making it one of the two oldest standing castles in Scotland alongside the Castle of Sweden in Argyll. Aberdour castle served as a home for 500 years to three different powerful families, The Mortimer family, The Randolph family and the Douglas family. It was first given to Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, in 1342, by his uncle, Robert the Bruce.

Aberdour castles downfall first started around 1680 when it caught fire. The central and west range were in ruins by 1703 as only the east range was fixed. Then by 1725 the Douglas family had abandoned the castle after buying the neighbouring house. over the next 200 years the castle was used as barracks and then a school but is now cared for by Historic Environment Scotland.
