Tal-Isperanza Chapel

The Chapel of Our Lady of Hope, built between 1757 and 1760 above a miraculous cave in Mosta’s Speranza Valley, is a remarkable example of Maltese Baroque architecture. Legend tells of a young Maltese girl who escaped Barbary corsairs by hiding in a cave and praying to the Virgin Mary. Seeing undisturbed cobwebs at the entrance, the corsairs left, believing the cave was empty. In gratitude for what was considered a miracle, the locals built this chapel above the site. The interior features elegant baroque decoration and paintings by Rocco Buhagiar and Raffaele Bonnici Calì. Numerous votive offerings still displayed in the sacristy and cave reflect centuries of devotion to the Virgin under the title “Hope of Christians”.
