Selmun Palace, located in Mellieħa, Malta, is an 18th-century Baroque villa with a spiritual and charitable foundation. It was built by the Monte della Redenzione degli Schiavi, a charity established in 1607 to finance the liberation of Christians enslaved by Ottomans or Barbary pirates. The estate was donated by noblewoman Caterina Vitale, and the villa was rented to knights of the Order of St. John, with proceeds going to the redemption fund. Although the palace features pseudo-bastions and decorative military elements, it was not a real fortress but served as a visual deterrent to corsairs. Inside, it once housed a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Ransom, whose devotion is still honored in a nearby modern chapel. Today, Selmun Palace is a protected national monument awaiting restoration.
