St. Michael’s Grotto
11th century sanctuary built on a much earlier one, next to the natural grotto where tradition says that the archangel Saint Michael appeared to Bishop Lorenzo of Siponto in the year 490. It is the oldest sanctuary of Saint Michael in Western Europe, and pilgrimage destination since the Early Middle Ages.
The sanctuary complex consists of the church-grotto, as well as an octagonal bell tower from the 13th century, a penitential chapel built in the 20th century that houses a precious crucifix from the 14th-15th century, crypts from the Longobard period, and a house for pilgrims.
