The Parish Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in St. Paul’s Bay, Malta, owes its foundation to the generosity of Countess Anna Bugeja and her husband, Marquis Vincenzo Bugeja, renowned Maltese philanthropists. In the late 19th century, when the village was still a small fishing community, Countess Bugeja had a summer residence in the area. The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows began when a noble family’s son found a holy image in a cave beneath Wignacourt Tower and gave it to the Countess, who funded the construction of a church dedicated to the Virgin. The church, designed by architect Emmanuele Galizia in restrained Baroque style, had its foundation stone laid in 1902 and became a parish in 1905. It was later expanded and rededicated in 1979. Today, it remains a vibrant religious center visited by locals and tourists alike.
