The hermitage of San Roque (Roch), located on the outskirts of a village and near the place known as “Atapao”, has been a point of devotion since the 16th century. The fiestas of San Roque, celebrated every year on August 16th, include vespers, masses and a procession with the image of the saint, followed by a feast with drummers. Although the hermitage had been in ruins since the 1950s, it was restored in 1997 thanks to the initiative of a former parish priest and the work of retired volunteers. The Brotherhood of San Roque has a documented history dating back to 1618, which is evidence of the importance and deep roots of this tradition.
Saint Roch is one of the patron saints of pilgrims, along with Saint Christopher and Saint Raphael, forming a protective triad for those who travel. In the Christian tradition, Saint Roch is invoked not only as a protector of travelers, but also as an intercessor in times of epidemics. This saint, who dedicated his life to healing the sick, is a symbol of strength and care, qualities that connect him in a special way to those who travel long distances, such as pilgrims.
