Grotto of the Madonna di Bisaccia

The Grotto of the Madonna di Bisaccia is a sacred natural cave located just a few hundred meters from the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Bisaccia, in Montenero di Bisaccia. Believed to date back to between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD, it served as a secret gathering place for the earliest Christian communities in the area. According to local tradition, a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and Child was discovered here and later moved to the nearby sanctuary. The grotto, nearly square in shape and about two meters high, still displays fossilized shells in its rock walls—traces of an ancient sea. Long neglected and once used as a shelter for animals, the grotto has since regained its spiritual significance and remains a revered pilgrimage site, connected to the sanctuary by a devotional Way of the Cross.
