Church of the Nativity

The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady in Xagħra, Gozo, is one of Malta’s most important Marian churches. Originally dedicated to Our Lady of Grace, it was rededicated to the Nativity of Mary in 1692 and is locally known as “il-Bambina” or “il-Vitorja,” as its feast coincides with Malta’s victory over the Ottomans in 1565. Built on the site of an older church from the 17th century, the current baroque-style building was constructed between 1815 and 1855, with the dome completed in 1892. Funded largely through local donations and labor, the church became a collegiate church in 1900 and was elevated to a basilica in 1967. It houses an altarpiece possibly originating from Senglea and includes a richly decorated marble interior and an elegant baroque façade. Pilgrims and locals still venerate the Virgin Mary here, continuing centuries of devotion.
