The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in El Barraco, Ávila, is an outstanding example of 16th-century carved granite construction. It has three rectangular naves separated by semicircular arches and covered by a simple Moorish framework, and a square chapel with a pointed ribbed vault. The bell tower, of great height, offers a panoramic view of the village.
The church houses an impressive high altarpiece, considered the best work of polychrome sculpture of the Avila school, created by outstanding sculptors such as Juan Rodríguez, Pedro de Salamanca and Lucas Giraldo. This altarpiece, which was completed in 1567 after a long process, stands out for its complex iconography, which includes biblical scenes such as the Annunciation and the Adoration of the Shepherds, as well as sculptures of saints and prophets. Restored in 2004, this altarpiece is an artistic and spiritual treasure that reinforces the cultural importance of the church in the region.
