Chapel of Our Lady Help of Christians

The Chapel of Our Lady Help of Christians (Marija Ghajnuna ta’ L-Insara), built in 1833 beside the seaside villa of Dr. Matteo Cachia Zammit, is the only chapel in Malta dedicated to this Marian title. Located near St. George’s Bay in Birżebbuġa, it once served both summer visitors and local fishermen. Featuring a barrel-vaulted ceiling and a Doric-style altar, the chapel houses an 1833 titular painting by Antonio Falzon and a finely crafted statue by Vincenzo Dimech, granted an indulgence in 1861. Over time it was part of three different parishes and hosted a major annual feast on May 24, especially notable during the 1950s. Although privately owned and seldom used today, the chapel remains a cultural and devotional gem in southern Malta.
