The Chapel of St Catherine, located in Wied il-Għasel near Naxxar, Malta, was originally part of the ancient hamlet of Ħal Pissa. It was built in 1607 by Marianu Mangion, who also arranged for Sunday and feast day Masses to be celebrated there. It is believed that the chapel was dedicated to his young daughter Catherine, who passed away at an early age. An inscription on the façade still attests to this act of devotion.
Marianu’s son, Dun Nikol Mangion, a priest, specified in his will that perpetual Masses be held in the chapel for the repose of himself and his family. He also provided for the inheritance of nearby lands, with the condition that if any descendant became a priest, they could enjoy the property for life. This chapel reflects a powerful legacy of faith and remembrance within the Mangion family.
