The Chapel of Our Lady of the Redemption of Slaves in Selmun, Malta, has a deeply spiritual origin rooted in mercy and liberation. Initially located within the historic Selmun Palace, it served both the local population and the palace’s owners. In 1792, a perpetual fund was established to celebrate Mass for the soul of Caterina Vitale, a noblewoman who donated her fortune to the cause of redeeming enslaved Christians—thus giving rise to the Monte della Redenzione degli Schiavi. The chapel’s altarpiece, painted by Antoine Favray (1779), shows Caterina kneeling before the Virgin Mary, offering her wealth to free captives. When the original chapel ceased functioning due to hotel development, a new chapel was built in 1982, designed by Carm Lino Spiteri, to serve the faithful of Selmun and visitors to the area.
