Sanctuary of Madonna Grande

The Sanctuary of the Madonna Grande, located in Nuova Cliternia (Campomarino), was built in the 17th century with donations from Diego D’Avalos, Marquis of Vasto. Featuring an octagonal layout and Baroque elements, it houses a venerated Baroque painting of the Virgin Mary with a blue cloak and red-purple robe. The artwork was rediscovered in a grotto after being stolen in 1880. For centuries, the sanctuary has attracted pilgrims from Molise, Abruzzo, and the Italo-Albanian communities. The main pilgrimage takes place on August 15, though in the past it was held in April to pray for rain and agricultural blessings.
