On the outskirts of Siġġiewi, atop a hill known as is-Salib tal-Għolja, stand two of Malta’s most cherished spiritual landmarks: the Chapel of the Annunciation and the Laferla Cross. The chapel, dedicated to the Angel Gabriel’s message to Mary, likely dates to the 15th century and has been rebuilt several times due to structural damage and earthquakes, with reconsecration taking place in 1749. Nearby, the Laferla Cross was erected in 1903 through the initiative of Fr. Paul Laferla to commemorate the Holy Year. It has since become a prominent religious and cultural symbol, especially during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, when thousands of pilgrims walk in silence—some barefoot—along a torch-lit path reenacting Christ’s Passion. The current cross, a bronze and iron replica from 1963, rests atop a limestone shrine that holds an altar, a crucifix, and sacred paintings, including one of the Virgin Mary.
